Roster builder guide

How to Play Golden Road LoL

Golden Road LoL is a fan-made League of Legends esports roster-building game. You spin a historical team-season, draft one player for an open role, and try to build a five-player lineup strong enough to win every major stop in a simulated season.

What is Golden Road LoL?

Golden Road LoL is built around one of the most fun debates in League esports: if you could mix players from different regions, teams, and years, what would the perfect roster look like? Instead of simply choosing five names from memory, the game gives you constraints. Each pick begins with a random spin. The spin points to a Region, a Team, and a Year, and you choose one player from that roster for one of your remaining roles.

The result is part trivia challenge, part draft puzzle. A famous roster may have an obvious superstar, but that star might play a role you already filled. A less famous team-year may still have an elite Support or Jungler who fits your lineup perfectly. The fun comes from reacting to the roll in front of you, not from following one fixed tier list.

The goal of the game

The Golden Road is the dream of winning every major competition available in a season. In the main Golden Road mode, your final roster is tested across Split 1, First Stand, Split 2, MSI, Split 3, and Worlds. A true Golden Road means finishing first at all six stops.

How the spin system works

In Golden Road mode, every pick starts with three wheels: Region, Team, and Year. The region pool includes major leagues such as LCK, LPL, LEC, and LCS, along with additional historical and international regions represented in the dataset. Once the wheels stop, the game shows the players from that team-year.

You do not have to take a player from a preassigned role. Instead, you pick one available player from the rolled roster whose role is still open. If Top is already filled, a Top laner from the roll cannot be drafted. If Jungle is open and the roster has a strong Jungler, you can lock that pick in. The draft continues until Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, and Support are all filled.

Building your roster

Your roster has five positions: Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, and Support. Each slot can be filled once, and each real player can only be drafted once per run. If you draft the same player from one historical season, that player is unavailable later even if another team-year appears.

Strong drafts usually balance star power with role scarcity. Mid and ADC carries are tempting, but Jungle and Support often decide whether a fantasy lineup feels complete. A great run may start with a legendary carry, then survive because you recognized a reliable role player from a specific era. The game rewards knowing teams as full rosters, not only remembering the biggest names.

Rerolls

Golden Road mode gives you one Region reroll, one Team reroll, and one Year reroll per run. A Region reroll changes the region, usually keeping the same year when a valid option exists. A Team reroll looks for another team in the same region and year. A Year reroll keeps the same team and region, then moves to another valid year for that organization. If there is no valid target for a reroll, the button is disabled.

Team Rating and results

After five picks, the game averages hidden player-season ratings into one Team Rating. Higher-rated teams have better odds, but the simulation still includes opponent strength and randomness. That means a stacked roster can win Worlds while missing the clean sweep, or dominate regional splits and fall short internationally.

The hidden ratings are part of the game, so the exact formula is not displayed during a run. Treat Team Rating as a broad signal: a stronger number is better, but the road is designed to be difficult enough that no roster guarantees perfection.

Strategy tips

  • Save rerolls for real problems. Early rerolls feel good, but the last two roles are often where a run gets awkward.
  • Value great team-years. Some organizations had seasons where nearly every role was useful. Those rolls give you flexibility.
  • Balance carries and glue players. A lineup of famous names can still feel uneven if Jungle or Support is weak.
  • Think before spending a legendary year. If the roll gives you a world-class Mid but Mid is already stacked in your draft, another role may be the smarter pick.

Common mistakes

The biggest mistake is using rerolls too early. A merely decent first pick is often worth accepting because later rolls may leave you with fewer open roles and less flexibility. Another common mistake is drafting only by fame. Name value matters less than the player in that specific year and role.

Players also tend to underrate Support and Jungle. Those positions shape how a real team functions, and in Golden Road LoL they are just as important to your final Team Rating as the carry roles. Finally, remember that your team has to survive a full season. Winning one event is not enough; the final roster has to perform across every stage.

FAQ

Is Golden Road LoL official?
No. Golden Road LoL is an unofficial fan-made game and is not endorsed by Riot Games.
Is it free?
Yes. The game is free to play in your browser and does not require an account.
How are players selected?
The game uses curated historical rosters from League esports history. Ratings are subjective gameplay values, not official statistics.
Why are some players unavailable after being picked?
Each real player can only be drafted once per run, even if another team-year with that player appears later.
Can I share my score?
Yes. After the simulation, the share screen can generate text or an image for your roster and result.
Does synergy matter?
There is no separate visible synergy stat in the current implementation. Results are driven by the selected players' hidden ratings, the final Team Rating, opponent strength, and simulation randomness.
